Iochroma sp.

The Iochroma genus is a group of South American shrubs that belong to the Solanaceae family. They have ovate leaves and tubular flowers that form in clusters. Iochroma coccineum is native to central America and has two inch long scarlet flowers. Iochroma lanceolatum is native to Ecuador and grows to about eight feet tall. It bears two inch blooms that are purple-blue in color. Iochroma tubulosum is native to Columbia. It grows up to eight feet tall with one and one half inch long deep blue flowers. Iochroma fuchsioides is a native to Peru. The flowers are orange-scarlet and are about an inch and a half long. Also known as borrachero, paguando and totubjansush, this species is sometimes used as a smoke, a tea and an "ayahuasca" admix plant. Use of this plant can cause delirium and hallucinations. These effects can last several days.

Iochroma enjoys a rich, well-drained soil in a sunny position. It is not a cold tolerant plant. Propagation is by seed and cuttings. Seeds should be started indoors in the spring. Cuttings should be taken from February to early March and may take several weeks to root.
